Are we seeing the limits of the Council’s discretionary power in the field of sanctions law? the case of Mazepin v Council

Maître William Julié, Maître Amélie Beauchemin and Maître Camille Gosson co-wrote an article, published by EU Law Live, on the case of Mr. Mazepin, sanctioned by the European Union, before the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The article provided a summary of the sanctions regime adopted by the European Union against Russia in the context of the armed conflict in Ukraine, and then developed the case of Mr. Mazepin, who was individually sanctioned and lodged an action for annulment before the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The Cabinet therefore voiced its concern about the quality of the evidence on which the decisions to designate sanctioned individuals are based, while highlighting the procedural safeguards allowing sanctioned persons to challenge the decisions.
